The Itinerary
The Narcisse Snake Dens host the world's largest gathering of snakes: 70,000 red-sided garter snakes emerge in May to mate — a spectacle unique in the world.
The snakes overwinter in limestone fissures ("hibernacula") and emerge in "mating balls" of hundreds. The site is easily accessible with viewing platforms. Peak activity: first week of May. In autumn (September), they return to their dens. Harmless to humans. Nearby, the Interlake region offers lakes and Icelandic villages.
