The Itinerary
Selkirk (10,200 inhabitants), 30 km north of Winnipeg on the Red River's west bank, proclaims itself "World Catfish Capital" — channel catfish regularly reach 13-18 kg, a record size for the species. An 8 m fibreglass "Chuck the Channel Cat" statue has welcomed visitors since 1987.
The Marine Museum of Manitoba in Selkirk preserves 6 historic vessels dry-docked on land: the SS Keenora (1897), Lake Winnipeg's oldest steamer, plus CGS Bradbury, SS Lady Canadian — a historic fleet unique in central Canada. The preserved downtown on Manitoba Avenue, the 1882 Selkirk Inn and several murals tell the Scottish heritage (Lord Selkirk, founder of the 1812 Red River Settlement).
15 minutes south, the St. Andrews Lock and Dam (1910) at Lockport is one of the few Bowring-style movable-crest dams in the world still in operation. Skinner's Wet Goods restaurant (founded 1929) serves the famous "Skinner's Hot Dogs" (house-smoked sausages). St. Andrew's-on-the-Red Cathedral (1849, oldest stone church still in service in western Canada) and the Captain Kennedy House round out the heritage tour.
