The Itinerary
In southwestern Manitoba, at the North Dakota border, Turtle Mountain Provincial Park (186 km²) covers part of a 670 km² forested plateau shared with the United States — the other half forms the International Peace Garden and Turtle Mountain State Forest. It's a "boreal island" in the heart of the Prairie: mixed forest, glacial lakes, moose, bears and panoramic lookouts.
Killarney (440 inhabitants), a turtle-themed town, is famous for Tommy the Turtle — an 8 m fibreglass giant statue, the official mascot. Killarney Lake (with its lit evening boardwalk) and J.A.D. McCurdy Park sit at the town's heart. 25 minutes south, Boissevain (the "mural town" with 17 frescoes) hosts the Canadian Sunflower Centre and the Sunflower Festival.
Turtle Mountain Provincial Park offers 200 km of trails, 14 lakes (Adam, Max, William), camping and wildlife watching (moose, deer, black bears, beavers). Adams Lake Lookout gives the best view. The International Peace Garden (existing road trip), 30 minutes south, completes the border excursion.
