The Itinerary

The Manitoba Agricultural Museum at Austin (160 inhabitants, 100 km west of Winnipeg) is the largest agricultural history museum in western Canada — a 50-hectare campus with 30 relocated historic buildings (school, train station, bank, church, Ford garage, dance hall, manor) and an unequalled collection of antique tractors, threshers and harvest machinery.

The Manitoba Threshermen's Reunion and Stampede (4 days late July, since 1955) is the star event: "ride the rails" on a historic steam train, horse races, western fair, steam-thresher demonstrations, antique tractor parade — over 200 machines in operation, some over 100 years old. The Champion Threshing Match (old-style wheat threshing) is a unique spectacle.

The reconstructed Homesteaders' Village offers an immersive Prairie pioneer life experience 1900-1930. Food-wise, Pioneer Pantry (on site) serves saskatoon berry pies and bannock. 25 minutes away, Portage la Prairie ("Heart of Manitoba") and its Fort la Reine Museum (1738 La Vérendrye fur-trade post) round out the excursion.
