The Itinerary
Hecla Island, in Lake Winnipeg, is a provincial park with a preserved Icelandic village, one of only two authentic Icelandic villages in North America (with Gimli).
The island, accessed by causeway, hosts Hecla Village Heritage Trail (church, school, fishing harbour restored from the 1900s), Lakeview Hecla Resort (golf, beach, spa), Black Wolf Theatre and moose viewing along the way. Spring and fall are hotspots for bird migration and garter snake dens (nearby Narcisse).
